How I Eat To Stay Lean And Strong Over 40
I’m Jeff. I’m 54, and the number one question I get asked is not about my workouts.
It is about my diet.
What do you eat? How do you stay that lean? What does a normal day actually look like for you?
So let me give you a real answer.
When I started my transformation at 51, I never once counted a calorie. I didn't follow a meal plan or eliminate entire food groups. I just made a couple of simple decisions. Cut out the junk (processed foods, refined sugars, and refined carbs), cut out the alcohol, and start eating real food.
That was it.
I pay attention to the amount of protein I eat, because I know that is what builds and maintains muscle, especially as we get older. But beyond that, I keep it as simple as possible. Because if I had made it complicated, I would have never stayed consistent. And consistency is everything.
Here is what a real typical day of eating looks like for me:
Breakfast
4 eggs, a leftover burger patty with raw cheddar cheese, half an avocado, and a side of berries.
Lunch
A can of sardines or tuna, four olives, and some low-sugar fruit.
Dinner
Two pieces of salmon, a small amount of rice, and a low-starch vegetable.
My wife Caroline does most of the cooking at home, so we always know exactly what is going into our food. No mystery ingredients, no processed fillers. Just real whole foods we can see and recognize.
That is the whole thing. Real food. Simple ingredients. Eaten consistently every single day.
After a while, your body starts craving the good stuff. The things you thought you could never give up- the junk, the alcohol, the processed food, the sugar- you just stop wanting them. Your body figures out what makes it feel good and starts asking for that instead.
